소개
한국 디아스포라 및 인종학을 전공한 문화학자이다. 미시간대학교에서 박사학위를 받고, 2022년부터 한국외국어대학교 한국학과 교수로 재직하고 있다. 한국의 힙합과 인종 글로 왕가리 마타이 상 (2015)을 수상, 한국학중앙연구원 펠로우십으로 작성된 박사논문 「한흑혼혈인의 영상족보: 미국과 한국 문화에서의 트랜스내셔널 재현」은 랄프 헨리 가브리엘 박사논문상 후보에 올랐다 (2019). 디아스포라 및 문화 과목으로 미시간대학교 우수 강의상(2016) 및 미시간대학교 아시아 태평양계 교수상을 수상했다 (2021). 최근의 주요 논문으로는 「검은 한국: 인종, 국가, 힙합, 그리고 문화 혼종성」(2022)을 썼고, 「민족과 국가 사이에서: 『백만장자를 위한 공짜 음식』의 텍스트, 파라텍스트, 콘텍스트」(2022)를 함께 썼다.
I am a cultural studies scholar, and my research focuses on diasporic Korean identities and race and ethnicity in multicultural Korea. After I received my PhD at the University of Michigan, I joined HUFS in 2022. My work on Korean hip hop and race was recognized by the Wangari Maathai Essay Award in 2015. My dissertation, "Visual Genealogies of Mixed-Race Black Koreans: Transnational Representations in American and Korean Cultures," supported by the Academy of Korean Studies fellowship, was nominated for the Ralph Henry Gabriel Prize in 2019. At the University of Michigan, my teaching was recognized by the Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award in 2016 and the Asian American & Pacific Islander Outstanding Faculty Award in 2021. I recently published the article, “Black Korea: Race, Nation, Hip Hop, and Cultural Hybridity” (2022), and co-authored the article, “Between Ethnicity and Nationality: Text, Paratext, and Context of Free Food for Millionaires” (2022).
